Description
About the Artist, Margaux McAllister Margaux McAllister is a multidisciplinary artist who received her MFA from San Francisco Art Institute in 2010 and her BFA from Moore College of Art and Design in 2004. She has shown her art both nationally and internationally and is currently living and working in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. Her work is an exploration of identity, specifically as a mother and she aims for it to be a record of this psychological and emotional journey. Using rug tufting as a means to make masks, she explores how emotions define and challenge our identities. About the Exhibit Mommy Monsters is a collection of giclee prints and tufted masks by Margaux McAllister. As an artist and mother, Margaux McAllister creates masks which express emotional states that challenge and define our identities. The masks are physical manifestations of feelings brought on by her experience as a mother. Through mask making Margaux explores the complexities that exist within motherhood. The idea of the Mommy Monsters came about when she found it hard to regulate her emotions when dealing with her children. The inherent dichotomies that exist in masks allows for the wearer to hide and expose parts of themselves simultaneously. Using the method of rug tufting, Margaux is able to subvert the domestic qualities of that medium. When her interest in creating identities based off of emotions began to grow, she started to relate the masks to her garden. Margaux began to imagine these masks as a representation of the care and the love that go into gardening. She began to incorporate plants and flowers into the photographs to extend the gesture of each emotion and deepen the understanding of the whole being. As her work is based on her personal experiences, she sees the role of the mother in these beings she is creating. Margaux sees the melancholy, the pose and the commitment to understanding herself as a mother in these works. Opening night celebrations begin at 5:30pm!
